Conversations: The Forsters
Like mother, like daughter.
Artists' Statements
Cornelia Jutta Forster
I was thrilled to be asked to be in a two-person show with my mother. Her creativity has always been an inspiration to me. Making art and seeing art together is an enjoyable part of our visits together, as well.
One way in which our artistic sensibilities overlap is in our love of texture. I currently start work on a very smooth piece of cotton and add visual texture through monoprinting. Stitching and embellishments can then add further layers of interest. Jutta Forster achieves texture by combining monoprint, paper, pre-printed fabrics and pre-textured fabrics, and other materials.
Like so many other artists, I have always been inspired by the landscape. The New England woodland draws me in. I’m especially interested in the more structural elements in the environment, such as tree trunks and granite. Maybe this is one reason I love the winter landscape so much.

A mother-daughter's art journey: It began when my daughter was a pre-schooler and I tried to enrich her art menu by doing all kinds of prints; also stitching and sewing with the machine on felt and doing some fabric collages from all kinds of scraps. When she was in college she got acquainted with free-design quilting. That's when our artistic relationship reversed itself and she began to teach me. She inspired me to do fiber collages. She also introduced me to gelatin printing and encouraged me to attend workshops and exchange ideas with other collage artists. A great source of inspiration for me became the Society of Collage Artists of North East Florida.
I hope the joyful journey will go on for many more years.
